Book 3: California is For Lovers

Lloyd and Henry. In 1960 California, a dignified, old-money vampire and a flashy, new-money vampire get along fantastically in the bedroom, and absolutely nowhere else.

Lloyd Stockwell became a vampire because he was dying, and cut ties with his family to keep the secret. Years later he meets Henry, a carefree human who chooses vampirism like it’s no big deal. They’re incredible in bed, and constantly butt heads out of it. 30 years later, Henry returns to the Haven, hoping psychic vampire Sean can help find a missing woman. To their shock, she turns out to be a relative of Lloyd: a family, after all these years. But when Lloyd agrees to help search, he’s forced to confront how much he missed Henry, arguments and all.

Henry Harlow cannot stand Lloyd’s constant grousing, and he knows the stodgy, old-fashioned vampire won’t fit in with Henry’s mod surfer life in California. But when they fall back into bed together, it’s just as amazing as the first time. Henry finally starts to realize how much of Lloyd’s disapproving attitude comes from past trauma, and foolishly finds himself wishing he of all people could be the comforting friend Lloyd so desperately needs.

1960

Lloyd was looking less pleased by the minute. “So I’m supposed to stay here with you?”

“What, you think I’ll kick you out for your atrocious taste in clothing?”

Lloyd scowled and gestured toward Henry’s loose blue trousers and madly patterned pink shirt. “I am not the one with atrocious taste.”

“Says the man in red silk pajamas. How many decades have you had those?”

“Henry, I don’t know if you and I can actually work together.”

“Me either.”

They sat a moment in the darkened living room. Outside, a car door slammed, and an owl hooted.

“Well, if we’re going to do this, we should get some sleep,” Henry said.

“Right.” Lloyd still looked so tense.

“Want me to relax you?” Henry’s question hung in the room, with only the sound of their breathing.

“Hell, yes,” Lloyd said, and Henry climbed right into his lap.

Those stupid red pajamas glided so easily beneath Henry’s body, warm against the thin fabric of his cotton trousers. Henry stayed on his knees so he was taller than Lloyd, and he kissed Lloyd like he was some delicacy to feast on. It had to be awkward for Lloyd, with his neck turned up, but he didn’t seem to care. Maybe it was because the kiss was familiar in a way it hadn’t been before, their first two intimate encounters thirty years apart. This time Henry had kissed Lloyd just yesterday.

Lloyd slid his hand up around Henry’s neck, fingers delving into his hair. Lloyd’s tongue explored Henry’s mouth, too patient as always, but Henry kissed him back just as slow. He grasped Lloyd’s shoulder, slippery in those pajamas, sinking his nails in to get a proper grip.

“You’re still so fucking good to kiss,” Lloyd murmured.

“Language,” Henry groaned, delighted, shivering from his legs right up to his ears.

Lloyd actually growled. “Need you.”

“What do you need? My mouth?” Henry’s lips were already buzzing, sore from the thorough kissing. “Want a proper tongue bath, old man? Til you’re throbbing, ready to blow? Shall I suck all that tension right out of you?”

“If it will shut you up,” Lloyd said, but it was half-hearted.

Henry laughed low. The kiss broke and they stared at each other in the dark. “My room,” Henry whispered. “You can always come back out to the couch afterwards.”

Lloyd didn’t react to the offer, maybe too far gone. He must really need the release for him to get spellbound so fast.

Lloyd stood up, easily hoisting Henry into his arms, and carried him down the darkened hallway. Henry wrapped his arms around Lloyd’s neck and whispered in his ear. “You know, I can carry you around, too. It’s not that impressive.”

Lloyd grunted as they came into Henry’s room. “It’s not like I have to impress you to get you to put out.”

“Oh, ouch.” Henry nipped him on the ear, and Lloyd responded by tossing Henry onto his own bed.

And then Lloyd froze. “What is that?” he hissed.

Henry lay back on his enormous, soft bed with bubblegum-pink sheets and comforter patterned with bright fuschia daisies. He folded his arms beneath his head, knowing his straining erection was on full display. “Welcome to 1960. You’ll have to put up with it if you want to fuck me.”

Lloyd’s jaw worked, and Henry honestly didn’t know what he was going to say.

“Think with your dick,” Henry said, exasperated. “Come on, I’m getting cold over here.”

Lloyd fixed him with a menacing glare that Henry’s brain somehow decided was adorable, and pointedly did not approach the bed. Instead, he started unbuttoning the top of his posh pajamas.

Henry sat up on his elbows to watch Lloyd’s broad chest gradually revealed with the pop of each pearl button. God, he was a handsome man, and those had to be natural muscles, as Henry doubted Lloyd had ever done a day of manual labor in his life.

“Gorgeous,” Henry said, and Lloyd gave him an oddly vulnerable look.

Henry groaned and gave in. He bounded up off the bed and came to his knees in front of Lloyd, bare-chested now, who looked down at him in pure lust.

“Let me,” Henry offered—or ordered—and slid his hands up Lloyd’s smooth pajama legs to his waist, missing his cock entirely. Looking up at Lloyd flirtatiously, Henry licked a long stripe over Lloyd’s insistent cock, right over his pajamas.

Lloyd seemed torn between a shudder of pleasure and another glare at the treatment of his clothes.

Perfect.

Henry kept mouthing at his cock, dampening the fabric. He grasped Lloyd’s muscular ass tightly to give himself some leverage. The silk was wonderful to work with, sliding over Lloyd’s swollen flesh, thin enough that Henry could get the tip of him into his mouth and suck.

“They’ll—tear,” Lloyd said, in a shaky voice. “If the silk gets too wet.”

Henry looked up so Lloyd could see him roll his eyes. “Fine.” He slid the drawstrings out of their knot and let Lloyd’s pajamas fall to his ankles.

Lloyd’s cock was bright red and leaking, and Henry smiled proudly. When he resumed his attentions, licking and sucking along the shaft, Lloyd gasped softly.

“Missed this on the plane,” Henry murmured.

“Missed it 30 years,” Lloyd said, and then stilled.

Henry pulled back to look up at him. “You know, if I ever want to get information out of you, I think I know how to do it. Maybe we should make this a regular part of our conversations.”

“Did you miss me?” Lloyd’s face was red.

For a moment, it was all so real, Lloyd not only California, but in Henry’s bedroom, about to be in Henry’s bed. The place Henry had fucked humans with broad chests and sturdy legs who never argued with him.

“Yeah,” Henry said softly. He leaned forward and took Lloyd’s cock down, all the way into his throat.
